Kaduna state House of Assembly impeaches deputy speaker, lawmakers drag each other by the loins

The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Thursday impeached Mukhtar Isa Hazo, representing Milgoma constituency and in his place elected Isaac Auta, from Kauru.

Hazo was until his election, the House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftain Affairs before his election as Deputy Speaker in February, 2020.

The 24-member Assembly passed a vote of no confidence in Hazo.

There was, however, a mild drama during the inauguration of the new deputy speaker when a member attempted to snatch the maze, the symbol of authority of the House, which led to exchange of blows among lawmakers.

The attempt was foiled by other lawmakers and the Clerk of the Assembly promptly administered the oath of office on Auta.

Another member, Liman Dahiru, representing Makera constituency, made a second attempt to seize the maze after the inauguration, but his efforts were equally thwarted by the Sergeant at Arms and other chamber staff and lawmakers.

Bayelsa Plaza at Lagos tradefair complex in flames

Bayelsa Plaza at the International Centre for Commerce, ICC, in Trade Fair Complex, Ojo Lagos, was gutted by fire on Sunday, April 19. The business complex, which is usually a buzz of business activities, has been locked down for almost four weeks to curb the spread of Coronavirus. This means that businessmen have been away from their shops for weeks and were not available to salvage any of their goods when the fire broke out. Most of them were only made aware of the disaster on Monday morning. Shops and goods were destroyed in the fire that has since been brought under control. The cause of the fire has not been revealed as of the time of filing this report.

33 APC members face expulsion

The Niger State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammad Jibril Imam, has disclosed that 33 members of the party may be facing expulsion and other disciplinary measures. Briefing reporters in Minna, the state capital, Imam said these members had taken the Party to court without exhausting all avenues for reconciliation and settlement. He said: “We have had running battles in the court of law regarding internal cases. Our members who lost primaries took the party to court. There are 33 internal cases from those who are dissatisfied with our primaries and have gone to court.” The chairman said the party had won all the cases as the cases have been struck out by the court, in favour of APC.” He said the party had decided to invoke the constitutional provision of the party which stated that once a member takes the Party to court without exhausting all avenues, the person ceases to be a member of the party. Kwara police intercepts 200 suspected almajirai attempting to enter Lagos through its state

Police in Kwara State on Saturday intercepted about 200 youths suspected to be Almajirai (street children) from Katsina State attempting to travel through the state to Lagos. The lorry with registration number Kaduna MKA 54 XL conveying the youths was intercepted at Kanbi/Oloru in the Moro Local Government Area of the state. Spokesman for the police in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident. According to Okasanmi, the youths claimed that they took off from Funtua in Katsina State and were heading to Lagos. He said, “The Kwara State Police Command, acting on intelligence, intercepted a lorry with registration number Kaduna MKA 54 XL driven by one Shehu Hashim of Manigi in Niger State conveying about 200 suspected Almajirai at Kanbi/Oloru area of the Bode Sadu-Okoolowo Expressway. “On interrogation, they were said be coming from Funtua in Katsina State.” He said...
